On the margin of the Quartet Meeting in Washington for making peace between Israel and the Palestinians

Dr.Nabil Kukali conducted an economic poll, findings of which are as follows:

*An overwhelming majority (81.5%) are concerned about the subsistence of their family.

*An overwhelming majority (81.5%) call on the US-Americans and the European countries to reconsider their decision halting the financial and economical aid to the Palestinian government.

*(85.1%) of the Palestinians believe that the EU and the US financial assistance contributes a lot to their well-being.

Beit Sahour – Information Section:-

In the most recent poll prepared by Dr.Nabil Kukali and conducted by the Palestinian Center For Public Opinion (PCPO) during the period (20-25) January,2007, a random sample of (1025) respondents representing the various demographic specimens of the population in the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, and Gaza strip over (18) years has been interviewed, The outcome revealed that (81.5%) of the Palestinian public are worried about the naked subsistence of their families at present.

Dr.Kukali has established that (81.5%) of the Palestinians call upon the EU and the US governments to reconsider their decision of halting the financial assistance to the Palestinian government.

In the light of the results of this survey, Dr.Nabil Kukali is addressing the Quartet convening in Washington as to exert their utmost efforts for achieving peace between Israel and it's neighbors and trusts that these donor countries, that never in the past let the Palestinian down, would reconsider now their decision and resume the suspended financial assistance to the Palestinian people and further boost this financial support enhancing thereby the chances of achieving peace in the region.

Dr.Nabil Kukali said the results of the poll where as follows:

The concern about the naked subsistence

Responding to the questions: "Up to which extent are you worried about the naked subsistence of your family at present?, (45.2%) answered "worried",(36.3%) are "too much worried", (13.0%) "not so much worried", (5.2%) "not worried at all" and (0.3%) answered "I don't know".

Significance of the US-American and European Aid:

Regarding the question: "Up to which extent the US-American and European financial and economical aid contribute in general to the well-being of the Palestinian people ?",  (37.0%) said "to a high degree",  (48.1%) "to a mediocre degree",  (12.4%) "to an unimportant degree", and (2.5%) said "nil".
 
The view on the EU and the USA when the financial assistance is resumed:

(42.4%) of the respondents said "their view to the US and to the EU would be high positive if these countries would reconsider their decision of halting their financial and economical aid to the Palestinian government, while (31.0%) "would have a moderate positive view", (25.6%) said "their view would remain unchanged", and (1.0%) declined to respond to the question.

What donor countries should do:

An overwhelming majority (81.5%) of the respondents called on the governments of the US and the EU to continue their financial and economical aid to the Palestinian government, while (15.9%) called for halting the aid to the government, and (2.6%) hesitated to answer the question.

The economic conditions

(74.0%) of the Palestinians evaluated the general economic condition in the Palestinian territories as "bad" whilst (22.5%) said "it's mediocre", only (3.0%) described it as "good" and (0.5%) declined to answer.

The financial condition of the Palestinian population:

(68.3%) of the Palestinians said that their financial condition in 2006 was worse than in 2005, whilst (6.7%) said that it's better and (24.8%) said it remained at the same level as in 2005. (0.2%) didn't respond to the question.

In addition,(28.2%) of the respondents expect that their financial condition during the year 2007 will be better than in the foregoing year, whilst (35.0%) said it may be worse, (28.7%) said it would be at the same level as the last year, and (8. 1 %) declined to answer the question.

Methodology of the Survey Study:

Mr. Elias Kukali, a staff member of the Research and Studies' Section at the PCPO, said that all interviews of this survey were conducted inside the respondents' homes, i.e. face-to-face during different working hours, at least 5 hours a day, including the evening time, in order to ensure proper representation of those sub-groups of the population, which would otherwise be difficult to reach and selecting one individual in each household using Last Birthday Method. The choices were taken from a total of (150) election sites, from which (108) sites are located in West Bank and (42) sites in Gaza Strip according to the distribution of the Central Election Commission. These election sites were randomly chosen by using the method of the simple random sample. These in turn were the beginning of the random sample choice made from those regions in accordance with PCPO's long experienced methodology.

Mr. E. Kukali has further established that the margin of error was (±3.06%) at a significance and confidence levels of (5%) and (95%) respectively. He added that the rate of the female respondents in this survey was (48.9%) against (51.1%) male respondents. The distribution of the random sample between the Palestinian two major regions was (63.0%) in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and (37.0%) in Gaza Strip, and allocated as follows: (50.3%) for the towns, (32.1%) for the villages and (17.6%) for the camps.
